Description
Moonlight rendered in Kimura's contemporary woodblock style — the lunar light depicted through the cool, blue-tinged palette and the formal relationship between the moon's disc and the darkness that surrounds it. Night scenes illuminated by the moon were among the most richly developed subjects of the Japanese printmaking tradition, and Kimura's modern treatment brings this classical subject into a contemporary register, using the graphic resources of the woodblock medium to capture moonlight's essential qualities: its coolness, its shadows, its capacity to transform familiar landscapes.
