Description
Dated to about 1793 and recorded by the Harvard Art Museums, this print by Kitagawa Utamaro appears in the series Models of Love Talk: Clouds Form Over the Moon (Chiwa kagami tsuki no murakumo), pairing the courtesan Kiyokawa with the otokodate, or street chivalrous men, Karigane Bunshichi and Kaminari Shokuro. The series exploits the literary motif of clouds passing over the moon to evoke obstacles in love affairs, casting each pair of figures as a model of one phase or temperament of romance. Utamaro draws on his command of Edo bijin-ga to present Kiyokawa as the central focus, her robes and hair articulating the height of late eighteenth-century courtesan fashion. The presence of two named otokodate, drawn from the floating world's stock of glamorous male protagonists, anchors her in a recognizable narrative milieu, blending Yoshiwara portraiture with the world of urban folk heroes. As ukiyo-e, the print plays on the period's blurring of celebrity and fiction, treating real or quasi-real personalities as ingredients in a stylized study of human passions. Compositionally, Utamaro often arranged his three-figure groups so that the courtesan's silhouette dominates while the men frame her at varying heights, balancing intimacy and dramatic tension. The series is one of the more conceptually elaborate of his career, combining seasonal poetic conceit, social typology and named individuals into a refined visual program. The Harvard sheet remains an important reference for Utamaro's middle-period mastery of grouped figures.
