The first print in Tsunetomi's "Seasons of the Pleasure Quarters" (Kuruwa no Shunju) series depicts the Nanchi district in autumn, showing a woman after a bath. The Japanese title "Yuagari" (after bathing) places the figure in a state of heightened physical awareness: flushed skin, damp hair, the relaxed posture that follows immersion in hot water. Autumn's cooling temperatures make the post-bath warmth more palpable, creating a contrast between the woman's heated body and the crisp air of the season. The Nanchi district was one of Osaka's licensed pleasure quarters, and Tsunetomi's series documents the daily rhythms of life within these enclosed worlds. The yuagari moment is simultaneously intimate and idealized, a private state that bijin-ga artists elevated to an aesthetic subject.
