Description

The third installment of the "Seasons of the Pleasure Quarters" series portrays the Horie district at twilight in summer. The Japanese title "Yugure" (twilight) names the transitional hour when day yields to evening and the entertainment quarters begin to come alive. Summer twilight in Osaka is warm, humid, and lingering, with daylight persisting late into the evening hours. Tsunetomi likely depicts a woman in light summer clothing, perhaps on a veranda or near an open window, catching the last of the fading light. The Horie district, located near the canals of western Osaka, would have offered breezes off the water during the hottest months. This print bridges the private daytime world of the quarters and the public nighttime world of performance and entertainment, capturing the threshold moment between the two.
