Description
A second exploration of "Glowing Clouds" (あかね雲, akane kumo) — the madder-red clouds of a vivid sunset or dawn sky. Nakajima Kiyoshi's return to this dramatic atmospheric subject suggests that the first composition did not fully exhaust the visual and emotional possibilities of a sky lit by crimson clouds. The akane (madder) color carries specific cultural associations in Japan: it is the color of the rising sun on the national flag, the color of certain autumn maples, the color of passionate feeling. Against such a sky, the landscape below becomes a stage for heightened emotional experience.
