Mad Clouds — あかね雲

by Nakajima Kiyoshi

Medium:
Woodblock print

Description

"Madder Clouds" or "Crimson Clouds" (あかね雲, akane kumo) — the vivid reddish-orange clouds of a dramatic sunset or sunrise, colored by the same mineral-derived madder pigment (akane) that produces the red dyes used in traditional Japanese textiles. Nakajima Kiyoshi's treatment of these dramatic evening or dawn clouds shows his interest in the spectacular and emotionally charged moments in nature's daily cycle. Against such a sky — turbulent, intensely colored, luminous with reflected light — a small figure or a familiar landscape takes on a heightened, almost visionary quality.
