$5,000–$40,000. Common subjects: $5,000–$10,000. Key value factors: Very limited output makes all prints relatively scarce. The 'Styles of Contemporary Make-up' series is most collected.
"Odori (Dance)," from 1931, depicts a dancer — perhaps a geisha performing traditional odori (classical dance) or a more modern performer — in a pose that captures movement stilled at its most expressive moment. Dance was a recurring subject for Kobayakawa, offering bodies in motion as an alternative to the static close-ups of his cosmetics series. His dancer is characterized with the same psychological specificity as his bijin subjects: this is a particular woman with a particular way of moving, not a generic figure.
