Description
"Tsūtenbashi" (Bridge to Heaven) from the Nihon Meishō Zue (Illustrations of Famous Places in Japan) series depicts the wooden corridor bridge at Tōfukuji temple in Kyoto, which spans the Tsūtengani ravine above dense stands of maple. The site is celebrated for its autumn foliage — a subject affording Kiyochika an opportunity to work with warm [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations of red, orange, and gold layered across the hillsides below the bridge. His approach to [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) in this series brought characteristic sensitivity to light and atmosphere to established topographic subjects. Unlike the nocturnal Tokyo views of his kōsen-ga period, this composition engages a classical scenic subject associated with seasonal beauty in the Kyoto tradition, placing Kiyochika in direct dialogue with the meisho-e legacy of Hiroshige. The composition likely presents a vista through the ravine, looking along or beneath the bridge structure with the autumn canopy filling the foreground and middle ground, printed in ōban format with fine color gradations.
