This [diptych](/glossary/diptych) presents formal portraits of two Meiji military officers: Infantry Captain (Taichi) Mizuno and Infantry Lieutenant (Chūi) Matsuoka. Military portrait prints gained widespread commercial appeal during and after the Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), when publishers issued commemorative images of officers who distinguished themselves in battle. Kiyochika produced numerous such prints, typically combining traditional woodblock techniques with Western-influenced portraiture conventions: three-quarter or frontal poses, detailed rendering of military uniforms with rank insignia, and relatively naturalistic facial modeling that departs from the stylized faces of earlier actor prints. The [oban](/glossary/oban)-format sheets would have circulated as commemorative keepsakes and as patriotic imagery for domestic audiences. The framing of each officer's name in cartouche-style title blocks above or beside the figure adapts conventions familiar from [yakusha-e](/glossary/yakusha-e) (actor prints) and [musha-e](/glossary/musha-e) (warrior pictures) to the genre of contemporary military commemoration.
