Description
'Great Soldiers Surrender' is the subject of this caricature from the Nippon Banzai: Hyakusen Hyakushō series, published under Kiyochika's pen name Honekawa Dōjin during the First Sino-Japanese War. The print satirizes the mass surrender of Qing dynasty forces, a recurring event in the conflict culminating in the fall of Weihaiwei in February 1895. The image likely depicts Chinese soldiers in exaggerated postures of submission — arms raised, weapons discarded, expressions of fear or confusion — rendered in the bold caricature linework characteristic of the series. The title's irony lies in calling them 'great soldiers' while illustrating their capitulation. Kiyochika's printmaking for this series prioritized legibility and impact over the refined tonal gradations of his earlier work, using flat color fills and emphatic outlines suited to rapid production and mass circulation as topical wartime entertainment.
