Description
Number thirty-nine in the Kyōdō Risshi no Motoi series, this print's subject name does not appear in the surviving title inscription. The series numbered its subjects sequentially, and number thirty-nine falls within a range that includes figures from the Sengoku through early Edo periods. Kiyochika's visual approach to the series consistently employs flat decorative color with selective tonal gradation, framing each subject in a legible compositional format suitable for young readers. The print's composition would follow the series convention of a single figure or small narrative scene with identifying text cartouches, rendered in the [oban](/glossary/oban) format with limited palette. The missing name does not diminish the print's value as a document of how Meiji-era print culture systematized historical memory for didactic circulation.
