Description
The title of this Kiyochika print is not recorded in available sources. Kiyochika's output spanned several distinct modes: the celebrated Tokyo [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) series of the mid-1870s through early 1880s, figure compositions rooted in [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) and actor-print conventions, and later war reportage imagery. This print, wherever it falls in that chronology, would reflect his studied engagement with Western optical effects — the way gas lamps or lanterns illuminate a confined space, or how moonlight interacts with clouds, water, and architectural silhouettes. His collaborations with carvers skilled in fine-line work enabled the subtle value transitions that set his atmospheric compositions apart from contemporaries working in more conventional polychrome [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) modes.
