Description
No title has been recorded for this print, making a precise description of its subject impossible. Within Kiyochika's corpus, unnumbered or fragmentarily documented prints frequently emerge from series that were incompletely catalogued during his lifetime. His working method involved close collaboration between artist, carver, and printer to achieve the subtle ink gradations his compositions required — particularly the nuanced treatment of night skies and reflected artificial light that became his signature. The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) technique, applied through careful wiping of the woodblock before each impression, allowed him to model atmospheric depth in ways that few contemporaries achieved. Whatever the image, it participates in his broader project of translating Western pictorialism into Japanese printmaking materials and formats.
