Description
小春凪 (koharu nagi) describes the brief meteorological calm of Indian summer—mild, still air in early winter, after the last autumn storms. This view of the Sumida River in such conditions presents a quieter register than Kiyochika's nocturnal and pyrotechnic subjects: a broad, placid river surface reflecting a pale diffused sky, with boats at rest and perhaps bare or sparsely leafed trees along the embankments. The subdued palette required—silvery grays, muted blues, faint ochres—demonstrates his range beyond the high-contrast night scenes. Delicate [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations would render the soft winter light without sharp tonal breaks, and the horizontal expanse of calm water provides compositional structure in the absence of dramatic incident. This print belongs to his [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) tradition of Tokyo views, documenting a specific atmospheric condition at a familiar Sumida location rather than a moment of urban change or technological display.
