Description
The second of two prints depicting Takinogawa, this composition offers a variant view of the Shakujii River valley in northern Tokyo. Kiyochika's serial approach to meisho-e subjects often involved exploring a location through multiple compositional angles or lighting conditions, and the two Takinogawa prints likely represent contrasting moments—perhaps differing in season, time of day, or vantage point. The wooded riverside setting provided material well-suited to his interest in atmospheric light filtered through trees and reflected off moving water. Bokashi gradations on the washi paper would render the diffusion of light through the maple or cedar canopy characteristic of the valley. Together the two prints function as a diptych-like study of a single celebrated landscape.
