Description
A second treatment of the snow scene on the Hikifune Canal at Koume (cf. kobayashi-kiyochika--39), this print shares its subject and likely its compositional basis with the earlier version while differing in tonal key, color choices, or seasonal specificity. Kiyochika's willingness to revisit the same location suggests these prints were issued at different times or for different contexts—possibly as part of separate series—each representing a distinct attempt to capture a particular quality of winter light and atmosphere. Subtle differences between the two versions might include the state of the snow (falling, freshly settled, or compacted), the time of day implied by the sky tone, or the specific distribution of figures along the towpath. The Hikifune Canal subject allowed Kiyochika to combine urban and natural elements—a working waterway, trees, architecture—within the spare, high-contrast vocabulary of his snow compositions.
