Description
Number twenty-eight in the Kyōdō Risshi no Motoi series, this print depicts Uesugi Torachiyo (上杉虎千代), the childhood name of Uesugi Kenshin (1530–1578), the celebrated Sengoku daimyo of Echigo province known for his military prowess and ethical reputation. As a child Torachiyo showed unusual intellectual and physical precocity, and he later spent time at Rinsenji Temple in formal religious study. Kiyochika renders the future warlord in his youth, likely in a scene emphasizing discipline or learning rather than combat, consistent with the series' strategy of locating greatness in formative childhood character. The print parallels the Tokugawa Takechiyo entry in framing adult historical achievement as rooted in youthful virtue.
