Description
Atago Hill in Shiba was one of Edo's traditional elevated vantage points, long favored by artists for panoramic views over the city. Kiyochika's treatment of this [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) subject departs from earlier topographic convention by using Western-influenced tonal contrasts to render the scene in atmospheric light. The hill's Shinto shrine and its steep stone staircase, features familiar to viewers of earlier [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e), here appear filtered through Kiyochika's distinctive approach to diffused or artificial illumination. By the Meiji period, the surrounding Shiba district had been substantially altered by new construction, and the print implicitly documents the coexistence of established landmarks with a modernizing urban fabric. The palette characteristic of this series tends toward restrained, dusky tones punctuated by a single luminous focal point.
