Description

Asakusa Kuramae, the district fronting the government rice storehouses along the Sumida River, is depicted here during the leisure hours of a summer evening—one of the signature subjects of Kiyochika's kosen-ga period in the late 1870s and early 1880s. The Japanese subtitle 浅草蔵前夏夜 confirms the nocturnal setting, which allowed Kiyochika to explore the interplay of artificial light sources—paper lanterns, reflected firelight, or the diffuse glow of the night sky over the river—against shadowed architectural forms and water. The Kuramae area was a working district that transformed into a site of popular entertainment in the evenings, and Kiyochika's print likely captures figures in summer yukata along the riverbank or beneath the eaves of commercial establishments. The warm tones of lantern light against the cooling blues of the night sky demonstrate his distinctive application of Western chiaroscuro within the woodblock medium.
