Ueno Park — created from the grounds of the Kanei-ji temple complex after the 1868 battle that ended Tokugawa rule — became one of Meiji Tokyo's principal public spaces, and Kiyochika documented it in multiple works. This undated view captures an interior scene of the park: paths lined with trees, perhaps in cherry blossom or early autumn colour, with strolling visitors suggesting the new culture of public leisure that Ueno embodied. The park's dual identity as both a modern civic amenity and a haunted Tokugawa ruin fascinated Kiyochika.
