Description
This meisho-e depicts Ueno Park, the former grounds of Kan'ei-ji temple converted into Tokyo's first Western-style public park in 1873. Kiyochika likely renders the scene with his characteristic kosen-ga technique, using gradated bokashi washes to capture diffuse daylight filtering through the park's elm and cherry trees. The composition probably includes the Western-style museum buildings or the Shinobazu Pond visible in the distance, situating Ueno as a symbol of Meiji modernization. Kiyochika painted this park repeatedly throughout the 1870s and 1880s, documenting how traditional temple grounds transformed into a civic recreational space. The atmospheric handling of light distinguishes the work from earlier Hiroshige topographic views of the same location.
