Description
This print depicts the Ariakerou, a restaurant or teahouse in the Imado district of Asakusa along the Sumida River. The title and subject closely parallel the companion print of the Ariake Restaurant at the same location, and the two may form a pair or belong to the same series. Kiyochika likely renders the establishment at night or in twilight, with lanterns casting warm light across a riverside veranda and the water below. The Sumida River provided Kiyochika with ideal conditions for his kosen-ga light studies: the flat water surface reflects and amplifies light sources, creating the luminous atmospheric effects that distinguish his work from earlier topographic [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e). The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation from lit interior to darkened river and sky demonstrates the printmakers' skill in graduating ink across the [washi](/glossary/washi) ground.
