Description

This print depicts a scene specific to August, likely drawn from a calendar series in which each month is evoked through a characteristic seasonal activity, natural phenomenon, or location. August in the Japanese calendar carries associations with the Obon festival honoring ancestral spirits, summer heat, cicadas, fireworks over the Sumida River, and the intensely humid atmosphere of Tokyo summers. Kiyochika's atmospheric approach would render the seasonal mood through carefully modulated light—perhaps the blue-white glow of a summer moon, lantern light on water during Obon festivities, or the hazy quality of midsummer heat shimmering over a landscape. The print likely employs oban format and the full tonal range of his kosen-ga technique, with bokashi gradients carrying much of the expressive weight. Monthly series were a popular commercial format throughout the Meiji period, allowing artists to survey the full annual cycle of Japanese life and landscape.
