Description

This nocturnal cherry blossom print is among the most characteristic expressions of Kiyochika's kosen-ga aesthetic, applying his atmospheric light-and-shadow technique to a subject that tested the conventions of the woodblock medium. Cherry blossoms at night present a specific optical problem: the blossoms become luminous pale forms against deep darkness rather than the pink-against-blue of daytime compositions. Kiyochika likely uses artificial light sources — lanterns carried by viewers, paper chōchin strung between trees, or the reflected glow from buildings — to define the blossom clusters as isolated patches of warm light in a dark ground. The technique, informed by his study of Western oil and watercolor painting, departs fundamentally from the flat tonal conventions of earlier ukiyo-e. Water, if present, would reflect and multiply the light sources. The designation '(1)' suggests this is the first in a series of related nocturnal blossom compositions.
