This kacho-e subject pairs a domestic chicken with a dragonfly in a format that draws on the natural history observation tradition while departing from classical Kano or Shijo school botanical-bird compositions. Kiyochika approaches the subject with the same interest in light and texture he brought to his landscape work: feather surfaces would be modeled with nuanced tonal variation, and the dragonfly's translucent wings rendered with attention to how light passes through the membrane. The composition places two creatures at different scales and speeds in deliberate tension, the dragonfly perhaps hovering before the attentive bird. Multiple versions of this subject in Kiyochika's output suggest it was produced in different editions or as part of a kacho-e series exploring domestic animals and insects.
