The second recorded version of Kiyochika's Chicken and Dragonfly composition likely presents a closely related scene with distinct printing characteristics. In multiple-edition kacho-e sets, changes between versions may include altered bokashi gradations in the background, variation in the color applied to the bird's comb or wattles, or repositioning of the dragonfly within the pictorial field. Kiyochika's kacho-e work shares with his meisho-e prints an attentiveness to how light defines surface and texture — here applied to iridescent feathers and veined wings rather than to gas-lit streets. The recurring subject across several editions indicates that Kiyochika or his publishers found this pairing of attentive animal and quick insect commercially viable in the kacho-e market.
