Description

Part of the series Nissei sensō shōraku gakai (Comical Art Exhibit of the Sino-Japanese War), this satirical print uses visual caricature to comment on the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95. The pairing of a 'Chinese black ship' against a 'Japanese white ship' inverts the famous kokusen (black ship) association with foreign threat, redirecting the imagery toward China as obstacle to Japanese regional ambition. The 'pig in serious condition' component functions as a crude caricature of China or its navy, a form of graphic propaganda common in Meiji war print production. Kiyochika was among the leading designers of war prints during the 1890s, producing satirical and documentary images for popular audiences. The series format and humorous titles situate this print within the nishiki-e broadsheet tradition rather than the fine-art meisho-e work for which he is better known.
