Description
A variant impression of Kiyochika's Zenkōji Temple composition, this print depicts the same Kawaguchi site in clearing post-rain conditions. Variant impressions in Kiyochika's output sometimes reflect different printings from the same blocks, which could produce notable differences in bokashi graduation and ink saturation depending on the block state and the printer's application of color. The Zenkōji subject, a provincial Buddhist temple offering spiritual significance to Edo-Tokyo residents who could not travel to the famous Nagano original, carried layered meaning for Meiji-era viewers navigating rapid modernization. Kiyochika's emphasis on transient atmospheric light rather than architectural specificity marks a departure from the literal meisho documentation of earlier artists such as Hiroshige.
