Description
This print captures the Yakumo Myojin (also written Yagumo Myojin) shrine in the Kanda district of Tokyo at dawn, one of several shrine and temple subjects Kiyochika treated in his atmospheric Tokyo series. The composition likely features the shrine's torii gate or main hall set against a sky rendered with gradated bokashi tones moving from deep indigo to pale yellow at the horizon. Trees surrounding the precinct would appear as dark silhouettes against the luminous sky, a compositional device Kiyochika used to dramatic effect. The relative stillness of dawn — before worshippers or vendors arrive — gives the scene an introspective quality at odds with his busier urban compositions.
