Description
This print depicts the Yakumo shrine in the Kanda district of Tokyo at dawn, likely part of Kiyochika's series documenting Tokyo landmarks through shifting conditions of light and atmosphere. The Yakumo (or Yagumo) Myojin shrine served as a local tutelary shrine in the Kanda shitamachi area. Kiyochika would have structured the composition around the contrast between the dark architectural and arboreal silhouettes of the shrine precinct and the luminous sky above, using bokashi gradation to render pre-dawn or early-morning light. The series format — this appears to be one of several variants on the subject — allowed him to explore the same site across different atmospheric or temporal conditions.
