Description

Hashiba, a district on the west bank of the Sumida River in northeastern Tokyo, appears in this evening landscape as one of Kiyochika's characteristic meisho subjects from the shitamachi riverfront. The area retained a traditional character into the Meiji period, with ferry landings, low warehouses, and riverside teahouses defining its waterfront. Kiyochika's composition would likely position the viewer at or near the water's edge, looking across the Sumida toward the opposite bank, with the evening sky reflected in the river's surface. Graduated bokashi washes in the upper register convey the transition from colored dusk to deep shadow, while lantern light from riverside structures introduces warm accent tones. The treatment of moving water through layered printing and the handling of twilight atmospheric haze are central technical concerns in prints of this type. Such views document the appearance of a Tokyo neighborhood that was already being altered by Meiji-era development while simultaneously mourning its transformation.
