Description
Nakasu, the sandbar entertainment district that formed briefly at the confluence of rivers flowing into the Sumida, was a celebrated site for summer fireworks in late Edo and Meiji Tokyo. This second composition of the Nakasu fireworks subject from Kiyochika presents a variant view of the same river-borne spectacle, likely distinguishing itself from its companion through differences in compositional framing, boat arrangement, or the specific moment of the burst captured. The Sumida River setting permitted Kiyochika to deploy reflections as a secondary light system, with rocket bursts rendered above and shimmered below on the dark water. Pleasure boats and river craft provided staffage and human scale, situating the fireworks within the broader culture of Sumida River recreation. The print belongs to Kiyochika's sustained engagement with artificial and natural light reflected across water surfaces.
