Description
Takushan (Dagushan) on the Manchurian coast was the site of naval engagements during the Russo-Japanese War as Japanese forces pressed their advantage in the Yellow Sea. This triptych or single-sheet print depicting the naval victory at Takushan follows the conventions of Kiyochika's war reportage: Japanese warships in aggressive configuration, smoke and shellfire across the water surface, and Russian vessels damaged or retreating. His naval battle prints were produced rapidly to capitalize on news coverage, using bold compositional diagonals to convey momentum and impact. The sea surface in these prints often employs the layered blue-green printing developed in his earlier atmospheric landscapes, repurposed for the dramatic textures of combat at sea.
