Description

The fourth image in Kiyochika's series documenting the Battle of the Yellow Sea (September 17, 1894), a decisive naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War in which the Japanese Combined Fleet defeated the Beiyang Fleet. As the fourth composition in the series, this print likely depicts a later phase of the engagement—burning Chinese vessels, billowing smoke columns, or Japanese ships in pursuit formation. Kiyochika brought his characteristic atmospheric lighting effects to sensō-e (war print) production, applying the same interest in smoke, flame, and reflected light that defined his earlier Tokyo views. The oban-format horizontal composition typical of naval battle prints would have allowed space to convey the scale of the engagement across open water. Printed and distributed rapidly during wartime, these prints served as popular visual news media.
