Description
The title Imado ariake takadone no kei translates roughly as "A scene of dawn and high clouds at Imado" — a morning atmospheric view of the Imado district on the Sumida River's eastern bank. Dawn was one of the lighting conditions Kiyochika treated with particular subtlety, the gradual brightening of the sky creating tonal gradients that challenged the woodblock medium and rewarded his close study of natural light. This undated print demonstrates his command of the eastern Tokyo riverscape in its pre-modern character.
