Description
The Japanese title of this print, "Meiji juyonnen nigatsu juichinichi yoru taika" — "Great fire on the night of the 11th day of the second month of Meiji 14 [1881]" — identifies it as a specific fire documentary, one of Kiyochika's series of prints recording the devastating urban fires that struck Tokyo in the early 1880s. The date, 11 February 1881, corresponds to a recorded conflagration in the eastern Tokyo districts. Kiyochika renders fire scenes with an almost cinematic immediacy: the orange glow against black sky, reflected in the Sumida's surface.
