Description

Kawasaki, situated along the Tōkaidō road between Tokyo and Yokohama, was a frequent subject in Kiyochika's work during the late 1870s and 1880s, as its coastal location provided opportunities for rendering water reflections alongside the atmospheric effects of mist and moonlight. A view 'off Kawasaki' likely depicts the bay or coastal waters near the town rather than the settlement itself, emphasizing open water and sky. The reflected image of the moon across the rippled surface of the bay would have required careful registration of shimmer effects across the water plane—a compositional challenge Kiyochika solved through layered printing with variant impression pressures. The subject connects to the broader tradition of tsukimi (moon-viewing) imagery while firmly locating it within the specific coastal geography of the industrializing Meiji capital region.
