Description

Nihonbashi, the stone bridge at the commercial center of Edo and Meiji Tokyo, was among the most symbolically loaded subjects in Japanese printmaking — the official origin point of the Five Highways and the heart of the city's mercantile culture. Kiyochika's night view transforms this familiar landmark through the kosen-ga lens: gas lamps or lanterns illuminate the bridge's pale stone and cast reflections across the canal's surface, while the surrounding merchant buildings recede into shadow. The composition may include horse-drawn vehicles or pedestrians as indices of Meiji modernization at this historically significant crossing. The treatment contrasts with Hiroshige's earlier daytime views of the same site, Kiyochika substituting atmospheric luminosity for the older master's clarity of form. Bokashi across the water surface and sky creates the characteristic softness of Kiyochika's nocturnal palette — blue-grey, warm amber near light sources, and dense sumi ink for the deepest shadows.
