Ochanomizu yuki — "Snow at Ochanomizu" — depicts the Kanda River gorge in winter, the rocky cut through which the river flows covered in snow and the bare trees weighted with white. This is one of several Kiyochika prints of the Ochanomizu district in different seasons and weather conditions, documenting a Tokyo site that was both scenic and distinctive — its stone-walled gorge unlike anything else in the flat, riverine city. The winter stillness of the deserted waterway brings out the site's geological character.
