Description
A woodblock triptych documenting the destruction of Qing naval vessels during the Battle of the Yellow Sea. Kiyochika depicts the scene at a moment of maximum visual drama—ships in flames or capsizing, sailors in the water, and Japanese warships maintaining disciplined formation in the middle or background distance. The contrast between the ordered Japanese fleet and the chaotic disintegration of Chinese vessels serves the print's propagandistic function while also reflecting genuine differences in fleet performance that day. Kiyochika's handling of fire and water, developed across decades of nocturnal and disaster imagery in his Tokyo views, gives the flames and reflections particular visual authority. Smoke rendered through layered bokashi gradations fills the upper portion of the composition, compressing the scene and heightening intensity.
