Description

Published in 1897 as part of the series Nihon meishô zue (Famous Sights of Japan), this oban print depicts Oyashirazuhama on the Japan Sea coast, where sheer cliffs historically forced travelers into the sea at high tide. By the late Meiji period, Kiyochika was contributing to meisho-e series that drew on the established tradition of topographic landscape prints while inflecting them with his Western-influenced atmospheric handling. The series format placed individual sites within a unified patriotic geography of Japan, and Kiyochika's rendering of this notoriously dramatic coastline would contrast the physical sublimity of the cliffs and breakers with the composed, horizontal framing typical of his mature landscape work.
