Description
This kacho-e (flower-and-bird print) departs from Kiyochika's better-known urban views, placing him within the classical genre of nature subjects that runs from Hiroshige and Hokusai through to Meiji-era naturalist prints. Two greenfinches (kawarahiwa) perch among the branches of a persimmon tree, likely depicted in autumn when the orange fruit hangs against bare or thinning foliage — a seasonal pairing common in kacho-e iconography. Kiyochika's Western-influenced tonal handling would bring a softer, more volumetric rendering to the branches and birds than the purely linear traditions of earlier kacho-e, while still employing the asymmetric, cropped compositions characteristic of the genre. The persimmon's fruit provides a warm chromatic accent against cooler background tones.
