The Chinese garrison of Jinzhou Fortress on the Liaodong Peninsula surrenders to Japanese forces in this December 1894 nishiki-e, the fortress gates open and Qing soldiers laying down their arms. Jinzhou's fall in November 1894 opened the road to Port Arthur, making the surrender scene one of the war's strategic turning points. Kiyochika renders the capitulation with the formal staging of Meiji military prints: Japanese officers receiving surrender, Qing soldiers in postures of defeat.
