Description
Autumn foliage reflected in a still pond creates a double landscape in this undated woodblock print — the scarlet and gold of the maples both canopying the water's edge and inverted in its mirror surface. Kiyochika's autumn compositions were less numerous than his nocturnes and rainstorm scenes but equally sensitive to the specific qualities of seasonal light. The formal garden pond setting — suggesting one of Tokyo's daimyo gardens that survived the Meiji-era redistribution of aristocratic property — provides a contained, reflective space.
