Description

This kōsen-ga composition combines two of Kiyochika's most characteristic atmospheric conditions: rainfall and nocturnal moonlight. Gohommatsu, a pine grove associated with the northern reaches of the Edo-Tokyo landscape, provided a subject well suited to his Western-influenced chiaroscuro technique. Rain streaks, rendered with fine parallel lines printed from multiple woodblocks, diffuse the moonlight into soft halation across the composition, causing the pine silhouettes to emerge from a luminous ground rather than recede into darkness. The bokashi gradations that define the sky — moving from pale silver to deep indigo — required precise inking of the woodblock with minimal pigment at the edges. The result is an image that registers atmospheric sensation as much as topographical record, typical of Kiyochika's approach to meisho-e during the early Meiji period when the pine groves themselves were beginning to disappear under urban expansion.
