Description
Sunamura, located in what is now Koto Ward in eastern Tokyo, was a semi-rural area known for its market gardens and open landscape at the edge of the Edo urban sprawl. Kiyochika's spring view of the district likely depicts the flat, open terrain characteristic of the alluvial lowlands east of the Sumida River, with soft spring light and fields beginning to green under a hazy sky. Unlike his nocturnal and winter scenes, this daytime spring composition would employ lighter, more varied color registers—pale yellows, greens, and the diffuse brightness of overcast or early-morning spring illumination. The subject reflects Kiyochika's broader interest in depicting Tokyo's transitional margins, where agricultural land persisted alongside modernizing infrastructure.
