Description
A sudden evening shower descends on Atami — the famous hot spring resort town on the Izu Peninsula facing Sagami Bay — in this atmospheric coastal print. The title's Japanese 伊豆熱海夕立 (Izu Atami yūdachi) names the explosive summer thunderstorm (yūdachi, literally "evening stand") that rolls in rapidly from the sea and passes just as quickly. Atami's combination of coastal landscape, hot springs, and the dramatic weather of the Izu Peninsula gave Kiyochika a rich atmospheric subject outside his usual Tokyo and war imagery.
