Description
The Mukojima Hyappon-Kui — the "Hundred Stakes" landmark cluster of pilings along the eastern Sumida bank at Mukojima — is shown at sunset in this undated woodblock print, its Japanese title 向島百本杭の夕焼 (Mukojima hyappon-kui no yūyake) precisely naming the site and the atmospheric effect. The setting sun turns the piling field and the surrounding water to deep orange and red, the geometric regularity of the stakes creating a rhythmic foreground structure for the spectacular sky. Mukojima's piling field was a beloved meisho subject for riverside landscape views.
