Description
Tameike — a large pond in the Akasaka district that supplied water to the Edo castle area — appears in this undated print from what appears to be a named landscape series. The Tameike, originally constructed in the 17th century and filled in during the 20th century, was surrounded by aristocratic residences and offered a lake landscape within the built city. Kiyochika's treatment likely emphasises the reflective surface of the pond and the atmospheric depth of the surrounding hills — the urban lake as a window onto a pre-Meiji landscape.
