This 1887 [triptych](/glossary/triptych) — identified as Miyo shun'e no baien, "The plum garden of imperial spring harmony" — depicts Emperor Meiji and Empress Haruko in the palace's plum garden during early spring, when the ume blossoms signal the end of winter. Kiyochika's triptych version of this composition, produced for the Meiji 20 year (1887), likely served both as a celebration of the imperial couple and as a demonstration of his technical mastery of the three-sheet format applied to a serene, politically affirmative subject.
